A wacker plate (also known as a plate compactor) is a piece of construction equipment used to compact soil, gravel, sand and asphalt. It uses a heavy vibrating plate to press material together, creating a firm, stable surface that is essential before laying foundations, paving, roads or driveways. If you are preparing ground for any type of construction or landscaping, a wacker plate is almost certainly the tool you need.
Types of Wacker Plates
There are three main types of compaction equipment available for tool hire:
Single-Direction (Forward) Wacker Plates
The most common type. The plate vibrates and moves forward, compacting the surface as it goes. These are ideal for flat, open areas like driveways, paths and trench bottoms. They are simple to operate and available in a wide range of sizes.
Reversible Wacker Plates
Reversible plates can move forwards and backwards, making them much more manoeuvrable in tight spaces. They also tend to be heavier and more powerful, making them suitable for deeper compaction and thicker layers of material. If you are working in a confined area or need to compact in layers, a reversible plate is the better choice.
Trench Rammers (Jumping Jacks)
Trench rammers have a smaller, shoe-shaped foot that delivers a powerful vertical impact. They are designed specifically for compacting soil in narrow trenches — typically for pipe laying, cable installation and drainage work. If you need to compact the bottom of a trench before backfilling, a trench rammer is the right tool.
When to Use Each Type
- Forward plate — driveways, paths, patio bases, general surface compaction on open ground
- Reversible plate — confined spaces, deeper compaction, working in layers, asphalt reinstatement
- Trench rammer — narrow trenches, pipe bedding, cable trenches, drainage work
Weight Ranges
Wacker plates range from around 45kg for small forward plates up to 900kg for heavy-duty reversible plates. The weight you need depends on the material being compacted and the depth of compaction required:
- 45-75kg — light compaction for granular soils, block paving, small domestic jobs
- 75-150kg — medium compaction for driveways, sub-base preparation, trench work
- 150-500kg — heavy compaction for road construction, deep fills, large areas
- 500kg+ — industrial compaction for major civil engineering projects
Safety Considerations
Wacker plates generate significant vibration, which can cause Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) with prolonged use. Always:
- Wear anti-vibration gloves and take regular breaks
- Use hearing protection — wacker plates are loud
- Wear steel-toe boots and high-visibility clothing
- Check the HAVS rating of the machine and monitor daily exposure
- Keep hands and feet clear of the plate at all times
- Do not operate on steep slopes — the machine can tip or run away
